National Night Out Events

Taxonomy Code: FN-4000.5900

Annual events involving citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials whose purpose is to increase crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods "celebrate" NNO with block parties, cook-outs, parades, visits from local police and sheriff departments, flashlight walks and other activities that bring neighbors together. The campaign is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and has been held every August since 1984.
